What it means

The API, or this part of it, is switched off or temporarily down.

Common causes

  • The API is paused for maintenance or an emergency stop.
  • A service the API depends on is down.
  • The proxy answered before the request reached the API. It uses the type /problems/unavailable.

What to do

Retry later with backoff, and honor Retry-After when it is present. Check the status page.

Retry: safe after a pause. Back off between attempts, and reuse the same Idempotency-Key for a write.

This response also carries Retry-After, the number of seconds to wait before you try again.

Over MCP, the same failure is a tool result with isError: true, the code unavailable and retryable: true.
